Memorizing and revising

In order to encourage students to memorize information in the long term, our artificial intelligence system, A9expert, creates a revision schedule which is adapted to each and every user. The system keeps a detailed account of the subjects which a student has come across, and calculates the ideal length of time to wait before reminding them about a particular vocabulary item or grammar topic. This calculation is based on the student's personal learning rhythm and their capacity for retaining information.

A new approach to retaining new information

Drawing on aspects of biological and psychological studies, recent theories have underlined certain aspects of the memorization process:

  • There's no point revising things you have already mastered.
  • New information must be revisited quickly, or it will soon be forgotten.
  • The timing of revision is crucial: correct timing can greatly improve your chances of remembering new information.

A9expert takes all of these factors into account, which is why GymGlish lessons prompt users to revise things which they are likely to forget at well-chosen intervals, making your new knowledge stick for good!

Repetition and learning

To help our students to remember what they have learnt, they watch each Rich Morning Show at different speeds, and with or without the help of subtitles. The first phase of the program gives the students 63 lessons, each using one of 21 different Rich Morning Shows. Each lesson comprises of the day's Show, a selection of questions, a,d is completed by a personalized correction (once the answers have been sent).

These 63 lessons are divided into three rounds. In the first round, the 21 cartoons are shown in a slowed-down version, with subtitles. In the second round, the cartoons are shown at normal speed, but still with subtitles. Finally, in the third round, the cartoons are shown at normal speed with no subtitles. Once the 63 lessons have been completed, we begin a second phase, which serves to reinforce what the student has learnt, and help them revise points they have had difficulty with in the first phase of the course.

Below is a video made by Smart.fm, which explains the principles of  'spaced learning':
